Brainstorming Session of the Revamp of PenangCares Portal

E-mail Print PDF
Dear Friends,

We’re glad to inform you that the Socio-economic and Environmental Research Institute (SERI) is planning a revamp for Penang Cares web portal and we would like to extend the invitation to all community-based organizations (CBOs) to be part of the initiative!

The portal at www.penangcares.net was created to foster a caring community in Penang by encouraging volunteerism in 2002. We in SERI realised that lack of a regular supply of volunteers to the Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) as well as the lack of one-stop platform for the potential volunteers/volunteer groups to search for volunteering opportunities in Penang.

The aims of PenangCares are, therefore, to:

- Provide a platform for CBOs to post their profile and volunteer opportunities, and for volunteers to get involved in a social work that interests them.

- Serve as a directory for CBOs in Penang for anyone – whether individual, group or corporate – to contribute and make life better for others in the spirit of volunteerism, caring and sharing.

- Channel volunteers to CBOs based on their area of interest.

- Keep volunteers updated with volunteer opportunities through our mailing list.

For your information, Penang was the first State in Malaysia to provide such facility, and the site has been continuously enjoying high traffic over the years. We think that it is crucial to promote volunteerism in Penang and it was regretful that the portal had ceased to be utilized in its full potential.

We hereby would like to invite you for a brainstorming session for the revamp of PenangCares on:

Date: 25th February 2010

Time:  3 pm – 5 pm

Venue: SERI (No. 10, Jalan Brown, 10450 Penang)

We will be having Professor Dato Anwar Fazal to begin the session with an introduction of the background, visions and hopes.

It will be our great pleasure to have the your participation to revamp PenangCares webportal for the welfare of Penang people.

The Benefits of Volunteering

"The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others." - Ghandi

Everyone reading this should be volunteering in some sort of capacity. I know. You’re busy at work and have no time. You also want a social life or family time. When in the world are you going to find time for volunteer work? Well, you better make time. We all work and live in a great community and it is our responsibility to give back. We get so much more back in return from volunteering. Let’s face it, aside from the altruistic reasons to volunteer, it can be fun and it makes you feel good to help others.

Back to basics: Volunteerism and fundamental philanthropy

In this generation, when business rules the day, it's refreshing to witness the (re)emergence of fundamental philanthropy.

What is fundamental philanthropy?

Simply put, philanthropy is any altruistic activity performed for the purpose of creating good or improving the quality of life.  Fundamental philanthropy is then described as 'basic' or 'natural' philanthropy.  This type of philanthropy involves using our own 'natural' resources, such as talents, skills, knowledge and opportunities to perform an altruistic act.
